Spiced with Love & Affection”: My Biggest Takeaway from the Holiday Season

“Spiced with Love & Affection”

Happy New Year, beloved community-

I just got back from celebrating Christmas with my family and some close friends in the DC area.

My intention for this visit was to reconnect with everyone as we enjoyed the holidays together and to take some time off from work.

As an entrepreneur who has been in an intense creative flow since my massive energetic shift that happened in the spring of 2018, it felt perfectly in alignment for me to give my mind a break from creating and just be present with the people that mean so much to me.

I am so blessed.

I cried tears of joy on my plane ride home to LA yesterday because I was literally overflowing with love from being with my family and close friends. I am so lucky and grateful to have such generous, inspiring, funny, creative, and loving people in my life.

This year I was very present to the passing of time and how our family has evolved over the years.

My parents have slowed down a lot so my siblings and I have moved into different leadership roles, organizing and facilitating numerous family gatherings throughout the week.

At the same time, the younger generation of nieces and nephews are growing up and moving through different stages of development, which is fascinating and heartwarming to witness.

I did some shopping and gift wrapping for both of my parents. I don’t know about you all, but after about two hours of hauling heavy bags of presents along the cobblestone streets of Georgetown, I was totally exhausted. And I am still young and strong! There is no way my mom or my dad could physically handle all the tasks that go into “producing” Christmas.

While I was home, I encouraged my mom to rest as much as possible. Miraculously, she still had the energy to prepare an incredible Christmas dinner for 20+ people (with some help), “spiced with love and affection”, as she always likes to say about her cooking.

Having said this, I know that the holidays are not a happy time for everyone.

Some of us have lost people this year and their absence can be felt more at this time of year than any other.

Some folks spend their holidays alone by choice and others are alone and don’t want to be.

Sometimes being around family can cause us to regress back into childhood behavior and roles. A trip home can be the ultimate test of how much we’ve grown and matured emotionally.

We are presented with so many opportunities to exercise patience, understanding, and to treat others with respect and dignity, even if we entirely disagree their views.

Everything is heightened and emotions are high.

My biggest takeaway from my trip home is that no matter your holiday experience, it’s usually an intense time, good, bad, or consisting of shades of gray, and we must take the time to digest and integrate whatever comes up for us.

In fact, this is exactly what the Winter season is calling forth from us - it’s an opportunity to turn inwards, rest, reflect, restore, and integrate.

While the love I received from my family and friends this past week was overwhelming beautiful, I’m also happy to be back in my own space and routine in here Venice.

As an emotional empath that naturally takes on the energy of other people, I’m taking time to decompress at home alone.

I’ve missed sitting in my candlelit sacred space, praying, meditating, and using pleasure as medicine in my holistic sexual self-care practice.

Winter is also the time to engage in ancestor work. Being with or without family at this time presents us with an incredible opportunity to heal and integrate ancestral and intergenerational trauma.

This year it became very clear to me that my role in the family is to begin healing our ancestral line by integrating the intergenerational trauma of slavery, colonization, racism, sexism, and misogyny.

How can you use the lessons from the holidays to fuel you going forward?

In addition to making this commitment to doing more ancestor work this year to continue healing for previous and future generations, I’m moving forward with an even greater appreciation of the amazing people in my life. I’m full of joy, gratitude, and inspiration to create my most powerful and embodied year ever in 2019.

Seasons, Cycles, & Rhythms: Embodying the Authentic Expression of Nature within Women

SCRJan.png

As women we have been conditioned by society to operate like men, elevating the masculine energy within us, at the expense of the feminine, in order to experience “success”, or at the very least, be safe.

Unfortunately, this unconscious dishonoring of the feminine leads to burn-out, dis-ease, depression, numbness, body hatred/shame, and cycling through the same relationship patterns over and over again.

For women, our power comes from embodying our authentic expression of nature and cultivating a harmonious balance of the masculine and feminine within us.

Each season, cycle, and rhythm of nature has its own wisdom impart. I invite you to surrender to and receive this wisdom for your own good and the good of humanity as well as the planet.
