How Cacao Can Help Your Love Life

Happy May! It’s been an absolute whirlwind for me since I began Quarter 2 of my Sex, Love, and Relationships Coaching Certification program with the Tantric Institute of Integrated Sexuality this week.

This month we are diving into the coaching practicums and my time management skills are being tested to the extreme!

Before things get too crazy I wanted to make sure that I told you about an AMAZING experience I had last month in Santa Monica, CA.

A few weeks ago I attended a heart opening cacao ceremony, hosted by my friends, Julia and Bethany, and led by my new friend, Shanti Lux.

I learned many things that evening, one of which was that raw, ceremonial grade cacao has been used for centuries, first by the Olmec people of Central America and then the Mayans and Aztecs, to help people access euphoric states, release negative emotions, and connect to pure heart energy.

Chocolate/cacao is a well-known aphrodisiac, which is defined as a food, drink, or drug that stimulates sexual desire. However, while I had a mind-blowing, transformative experience that night, it wasn’t sexual at all.

It was all about love, intimacy, and connection.

Around 7:30pm that evening, after Shanti cleansed our individual energetic fields and blessed us with some burning sage (see the pic below), the ten of us helped ourselves to a hot cup of cacao from the stove and sat in a circle.

Shanti started the ceremony with a big smile and warm, welcoming energy as she briefly explained the origin of cacao ceremonies and what to expect that night. After that she led us in a group chant as she played the harmonium.

The “main event” consisted of us getting into pairs, sitting opposite from each other, each of us placing one hand over the other’s heart and staring into each other’s eyes until we felt like we truly “saw” one another. Once we felt complete in our connection, we spoke the words “in lak’ech” (you are me or I am you) to each other and found a new partner.

If you’re uncomfortable with intimacy, you would have found this exercise to be VERY challenging. Honestly, several years ago I would have had an extremely hard time with this. In order for someone to really “see” you you have to make yourself vulnerable.

This can be REALLY scary, so most people aren’t ready for this, but everyone in this group was totally game. It was AMAZING.

I relished the opportunity to plug into the energy of other beautiful, loving souls, and everyone there was so open. As I stared into the eyes of people I had just met for several minutes, I engaged my ujjayi “victorious” breath that I learned in yoga and dropped into the present moment. It was so fucking intense!!!

After we each took turns “seeing” one another, we closed the ceremony with more music. I felt so energetic and light. I couldn’t stop smiling. I was buzzing!

After a bit of socializing - I wanted to know more about these lovely souls - I practically skipped back to my car and drove home.

After a great night’s sleep, I woke up in the best mood! I was so HAPPY. I was still high on love energy. I can’t wait for the next ceremony.

My advice: be open to new experiences and practice vulnerability as much as you can. I know it can be really scary sometimes, but if you let yourself go there, magic can happen.

I hope this serves you.

All my love and gratitude,

Heather xoxo
